Vreeland Design Associates Re: Crimson&Clover Farm, 215 Spring St,Northampton, MA: Structural assessment onew addition roof to existing barn to support proposed solar panel array. I have reviewed the architectural plans prepared by Fitch Architecture, Amherst, MA and investigated the roof framing of the new 1-1/2-story 26'x 36' saltbox style addition off the northeast gable end of the existing timber framed barn. The barn appears to have been built around the late 1800s or early 1900s. 20 PV solar panels are to be installed on the front southeast facing shorter roof of the addition. 31 PV solar panels were installed on the southeast facing roof of the barn in 2021/2022. The addition roof is framed with 14" I-joist rafters installed 24"on-center with the southeast rafters spanning 10' with an 8/12 roof pitch. The rafters are supported on a 5 H 24" LVL ridge beam spanning 35'. The exterior walls supporting the rafters are framed with 2x6 studs at 16"on-center. The roofing is screwed down corrugated metal. I have reviewed the mounting details for the PV solar panel array. CorruSlide mounting brackets will be secured to the metal roof corrugations for mounting the PV solar panel array. At each CorruSlide location install a 1%"x#12 roofing screw into the roof sheathing on both sides of the corrugation or just one screw if an existing screw is within 6"of the CorruSlide bracket. Based on my calculations and a PV solar panel unit weight of 46± lbs,with the attachment points oft e array placed at a maximum of 36"on-center and staggered to minimize the load to any one after, the existing roof framing is adequate to support the proposed PV solar panel array and the s ow and wind load requirements of the current 9th Edition of the MA State Building Code forth City of Northampton.
