The locations specified in Sections R308.4.1 through
R308.4.7 shall be considered to be specific hazardous locations for the purposes of glazing.
Glazing in fixed and operable panels of swinging,
sliding and bifold doors shall be considered to be a hazardous location.
1. Glazed openings of a size through which a 3-inch-diameter (76 mm)
sphere is unable to pass.
2. Decorative glazing.
Glazing in an individual fixed or
operable panel adjacent to a door shall be considered to be a hazardous location
where the bottom exposed edge of the glazing is less than 60 inches (1524 mm)
above the flooR... and it meets either of the following conditions:
1.Where the glazing is within 24 inches (610 mm) of either side of the
door in the plane of the door in a closed position.
2. Where the glazing is on a wall perpendicular to the plane of the door in a
closed position and within 24 inches (610 mm) of the hinge side of an
in-swinging door.
Glazing in an individual fixed or operable panel
that meets all of the following conditions shall be considered to be a hazardous
location:
1. The exposed area of an individual pane is larger than 9 square feet (0.836
m2),
2. The bottom edge of the glazing is less than 18 inches (457 mm) above

Glazing in walls... and enclosures...
containing... bathtubs and showers... where the bottom exposed edge of the glazing
is less than 60 inches (1524 mm)... above any standing or walking surface shall be
considered to be a hazardous location. This shall apply to single glazing and each
pane in multiple glazing.

horizontally and in a straight line, from the water’’s edge of a bathtub... or
from the edge of a shower...
Window fall protection shall be
provided in accordance with Sections R312.2.1 and R312.2.2.
In dwelling units, where the top of the sill of an
operable window opening is located less than 24 inches (610 mm) above the
finished floor and greater than 72 inches (1829 mm) above the finished grade or
other surface below on the exterior of the building, the operable window shall
comply with one of the following:
1. Operable windows with openings that will not allow a
4-inch-diameter (102 mm) sphere to pass through the
opening where the opening is in its largest opened position.
2. Operable windows that are provided with window fall
prevention devices that comply with ASTM F 2090.
3. Operable windows that are provided with window opening
control devices that comply with Section R312.2.2.
Window opening
control devices shall comply with ASTM F 2090. The window opening
control device, after operation to release the control device allowing the window to
fully open, shall not reduce the net clear opening area of the window unit to less
than the area required by Section R310.2.1.

Smoke alarms shall be installed in the
following locations:
1. In each sleeping room.
2. Outside each separate sleeping area in the immediate
vicinity of the bedrooms.
3. On each additional story of the dwelling, including
basements and habitable attics and not including crawl
spaces and uninhabitable attics. In dwellings or dwelling
units with split levels and without an intervening door
between the adjacent levels, a smoke alarm installed on the
upper level shall suffice for the adjacent lower level provided
that the lower level is less than one full story below the
upper level.
4. Smoke alarms shall be installed not less than three feet
(914 mm) horizontally from the door or opening of a
bathroom that contains a bathtub or shower unless this
would prevent placement of a smoke alarm required by
section R314.3.
5. For each 1,000 ft of area or part thereof.
6. Near all stairs.
A single heat detector listed for the
ambient environment shall be installed in:
1. Any garage attached to or under the dwelling
(detached garages do not require a heat detector).
Carbon monoxide alarms in dwelling
units shall be outside of each separate sleeping area within
ten feet of the bedrooms... At least one alarm shall be
installed on each story of a dwelling unit, including
basements and cellars but not in crawl spaces and
uninhabitable attics.
Combination carbon
monoxide and smoke alarms (in compliance with section
314) shall be permitted to be used in lieu of carbon
monoxide alarms, located as in R315.3, provided they are
compatible and the smoke alarms take precedence.
