Vreeland Design Associates Re: Marc Liberatore, 22 Maple St, Florence, MA: Structural assessment of existing house roofs to support proposed PV solar panel arrays. I have investigated the existing roof framing for the proposed PV solar panel installations. e original 2-story, 20'x 29' main house appears to have been constructed around the late 1800 .A 1- 1/2-story, 12'x 25' addition off the west gable end of the house along with a 1-story, 12'x 1 ' addition off the west gable end of the addition appear to have been constructed at a later date. 16 PV solar panels are to be installed on the south facing roof of the house, 3 solar panels on th south facing roof of the 1-1/2-story addition and 3 solar panels on the south facing roof of e 1- story addition. The house roof framed could not be viewed directly, but based on measurem nt the roof appears to be framed with full dimension 2x6 rafters installed 24"on-center, spanning '-6" with a roof slope of 6/12. The rafters appear to be secured to the second floor framing preve ting the roof from spreading. The addition roofs are framed with full dimension 2x5 rafters insta led 24"on-center, spanning 6' with a 6/12 roof pitch. The 1-1/2-story ceiling joists are secured o the bottom of the rafters preventing the roof from spreading. The 1-story section have 2—2x8 r fter ties installed 4' on-center sandwiching a pair of rafters preventing the roof from spreading. The roofing is composite asphalt shingles. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed PV solar panel arrays. Based on my calculations and a solar panel unit weight of 46± lbs, with the attachment points of the arrays placed at a maximum of 4' on-center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter,the house and additions roof framing are adequate to support the proposed PV solar panel arrays and the snow and wind load requirements of the current 9th Edition of the MA State Building Code for the City of Northampton.
