Vreeland Design Associates Re: Joe Blumenthal, 23 Pleasant St,Northampton, MA: Structural assessment of existing roof to support proposed PV solar panel array.Note: Assessor's property card states; 17 Pleasant St. On 9/28/22, I conducted a site visit and investigated the structural roof framing details of th; brick 4-story,40'x 52' main building which has a 40'x 30', 3-story section at the back of the built ing. Based on the assessor's records the original building was constructed around 1880. 32 PV s,.lar panels are to be installed on the southwest facing shallow pitched roof of the main building, see photo below: • 32 panels , ( ' ► 111 . E 11: > W S Mak The roof of the main building is framed with five(5)parallel chord timber girder trusses in talled 10'±on-center, spanning 38'-9". The top and bottom chords and the diagonal webs of the Queenrod trusses are 7x10 timbers. The timbers appear to be select structural Douglas-fir. e height of the trusses starts at 8'-9"±near the front of the building and decreases in height to 6'-9" at the rear of the main building. It appears that full dimension 2x5 purlin rafters are installe 20" 116 River Road, Leyden, MA 01337 Phone: (413) 62 -0126 Email: dvreeland@verizon.net Fax: (413) 62 -3282 on-center and are secured in shallow mortises cut into the sides of the top chords of the trus es. I was not able to determine the roof sheathing used, but based on other buildings I have inves igated of similar age, I suspect 1"boards are secured to the top of the purlin rafters. The vertical 1' diameter steel queen-rods are located 12'-10"in from the ends of the top and bottom chords The angled 7x10 webs are notched into the top and bottom chords. The lower end of the webs a secured with a 1"diameter bolts through the web and bottom chord with 5"diameter washe s. The trusses appear to bear on steel plates in the brick masonry walls. The roofing is an EPDM membrane. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed PV solar panel array. Based on my calculations and a PV solar panel unit weight of 59± lbs, with the attachment points of the atray placed at a maximum of 5' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one purlin r.fter, the existing timber trusses and roof framing of the main building are adequate to support the proposed PV solar panel array and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA .tate Building Code for the City of Northampton. Not just the worst storms in years, f / / r but the worst storms in 40 years. High winds capable of 7L i ---' -,,_ ripping panels from a roof, and snowfalls weighing . / ---, enough to buckle a panel frame. T XR Rails are the structural backbone preventing these results. They resist uplift, protect \against buckling and safely and efficiently ` \` it ' transfer loads into the building structure.
