Vreeland Design Associates Re: Phyllis King, 65 Warner St,Florence,MA: Structural assessment of the new house and garage roofs to support proposed PV solar panel arrays. I have investigated the roof framing for the proposed PV solar panel installations. The 2-story, 26'x 34' house with a 12'x 24', 1-1/2-story attached garage off the east side of the house was constructed this year. 15 PV solar panels are to be installed on the west facing roof of the house and 5 solar panels on the front south facing roof of the garage. The house and garage roofs are framed with 2x10 rafters installed 16"on-center, spanning 12'-6"with a roof slope of 9/12 on the house and spanning 11'-6" with a 12/12 slope on the garage. 2x8 ceiling joists are secured to the bottom of the house rafters preventing the roof from spreading. The garage rafters are secured to the 2nd floor framing preventing the roof from spreading. The roofing is composite asphalt shingles. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed PV solar panel arrays. Based on my calculations and a solar panel unit weight of 49f lbs, with the attachment points of each array placed at a maximum of 4' on-center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter,the house and garage roof framing is adequate to support the proposed PV solar panel arrays and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code for the City of Northampton.
