Vreeland Design Associates Re: Jennifer Normanly, 48 Hockanum Rd, Northampton, MA: Structural assessment of existing house roof to support proposed solar panel array. I have investigated the roof framing of the house for the proposed PV solar panel installation. The 27'x 38', 2-story house was constructed around in 1900. 24 PV solar panels are to be installed on the front southwest facing roof. The rafters are full dimension 2x5 installed 24"on-center, spanning 13' with a 10/12± slope. The rafters are secured to the 2x6 attic floor joist framing and prevent the roof from spreading. The existing slate roofing is to be removed and replaced with composite asphalt shingles. The 2x5 rafters supporting the solar panels will need to be reinforced to be able to support the panels and meet the structural requirements of the current MA State Building Code. Reinforce the existing rafters by installing a 2x6 kneewall located 2'-6" in from the exterior wall to reduce the span of the rafters. Attach the vertical 2x6s to the sides of the rafters with 4—2-7/8"/31/2"FlatLok or equivalent structural screws and toe screw to a 2x6 plate that has been attached to the top of the attic joists. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed PV solar panel array. Based on my calculations and on the specified PV solar panel unit weight of 46± lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter,the reinforced rafters, as outlined above, are adequate to support the proposed PV solar panel array with snow guards installed and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code for the City of Northampton. Clean roof surface of dirt, debris, 1/4" snow and ice. Snap chalk lines for attachment rows. On shingle roofs, snap lines 1/4" below upslope edge of shingle coarse. This line will be used to align the upper edge of the mount. NOTE: Space mounts per racking system installation specifications. STEP ONE: SECURE -�` ATTACHING TO A RAFTER: Place FLASHLOC DUO over rafter location with sealant port on up-slope side and align upper edge of mount with horizontal chalk line.
