At your request New England Construction Engineering, PLC (NECE) has reviewed the
information that Pioneer Valley PhotoVoltaics Cooperative, Inc. (PV Squared) provided on the
Klepacki residence at 107 Baker Hill Road, in Florence (village of Northampton), MA. The
purpose of this review was to provide an opinion regarding the structure's capacity to support a
proposed rooftop mounted photovoltaic (PV) array. The information that you provided is
attached to this letter for reference.
You are proposing to mount rooftop PV panels on the house roof and attached garage. The
house is a contemporary design. Both the house and attached garage have flat roofs. Town tax
records indicate that the house was constructed circa 1996. You have provided design plans for
the building. The design plans indicate that the main house roof was framed with 2x12 roof
joints at 24”O.C. These joists typically span approximately 14’ to 14’‐6” between supports.
The garage roof is framed with 14” TJI, wood I‐joists at 19.2” O.C. The garage is unfinished, and
based on the I‐joints flange dimensions, the TJIs are 230 Series, 14” TJIs. These joists span
between 21’ ‐6” and 23’‐9”.
NECE’s review and analysis included controlling gravity load combinations (snow and dead load).
Conclusion:
Based on my review of the information that you provided, I have concluded that, the roof will
support your proposed PV Array. I base this opinion on the following. The ground snow load (Pg)
for Northampton is 40psf. The minimum flat roof snow load (Pf) is also 35psf. The information
that you provided indicates that the proposed panels and racking weigh approximately 2.8psf.

In summary, in my opinion, the house and attached garage roof will support your proposed PV
array.
