(PV Squared) provided on the roof supporting structure of the Ranti residence, at 196 Round Hill Road, in Northampton, MA. The purpose of this review was to provide an opinion regarding the structure's capacity to support a proposed rooftop mounted photovoltaic (PV) array.The information that you provided is attached to this letter for reference. The house is a three-story wood framed residence with a multi-pitch roof. The roof has an existing PV array, and you are proposing to add two sub-arrays. One sub-array is to be mounted on the same side of the roof, and below the existing array. You also propose to mount PV panels on the opposite side of the peak from the exist array. The roof under your proposed PV panels has a 2/12 pitch on one side, and a 4.5/12 pitch on the opposite side. Below the 4.5/12 pitch section is a steeper pitch section of roof where you do not propose any PV. The roof has standing seam metal roofing. The roof is supported by manufactured roof trusses at 24" O.C. The third-floor ceiling is finished and the trusses cannot be observed without destroying finishes.The information that you provided includes wood roof truss design output from Truss Engineering and Universal Forest Products. These truss plans bear the seal of a Professional Engineer licensed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The trusses were designed for a Top Chord Live (Snow) Load of 40psf, and a Top Chord Dead Load of 10psf. The Bottom Chord was designed for a 10psf Dead Load. The ground Snow Load for Northampton is 40psf. The Snow load for this roof is 35psf, the minimum Flat Roof Snow Load (Pf) for Northampton. The photographs you provided suggest that the house is well maintained and that the roof is performing well. There is no evidence of distress or large deflections. In providing this review and opinion, NECE assumes that the trusses were properly installed as designed including all required bracing. Conclusion: Based on the information that you provided, I conclude that, the roof will support your proposed PV array. I base this on the following.The proposed PV panels will be installed parallel to the existing roof, eliminating additional wind load. Based on the information that you have provided on similar projects; I assume that the PV panels weigh approximately 2.3 psf.
