I have investigated the existing roof framing of the garage and barn for the proposed PV solar panel installations. The 2-story contemporary house and attached 24'x 24', 1-story garage was constructed in 1982.The detached 20'x 34' 1-story barn appears to have been constructed at an earlier date. 14 PV solar panels are to be installed on the south facing roof of the garage and 18 solar panels on the south facing roof of the barn.The garage roof is framed with 2x4 Fink designed roof trusses installed at 24"on-center, spanning 24' with a 6/12 roof slope. The barn roof is constructed with full dimension 2x6 rafters installed 16"on-center, spanning 9'-8"with a 7/12 slope.2x6 attic floor joists installed 24"on-center are attached to the wall studs preventing the roof from spreading.The roofing is composite asphalt shingles. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed PV solar panel arrays. Based on my calculations and on the specified PV solar panel unit weight of 49f lbs,with the attachment points of the arrays placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one roof truss or barn rafter,the existing roof framing of the garage and barn are adequate to support the proposed PV solar panel arrays and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code for the City of Northampton.
