Vreeland Design Associates Re: Jeff Novick, 29 Sumner Ave, Florence, MA: Structural assessment of existing house and roofs to support proposed PV solar panel arrays. I have investigated the roof framing of the 23'x 26',2-story hipped roof house,constructed in 1922, for the proposed PV solar panel installations. 5 PV solar panels are to be installed on the 26' long south facing roof of the house and 4 solar panels on the back east facing roof. The house rafters are full dimension 2x5 installed 24"-26"on-center, with the span of the full-length rafters 11'±, with a roof pitch of approximately 8/12. The hip rafters are full dimension 2x5. The rafters are supported on a double full dimension 2x4 top wall plate. 2x5 attic joists are secured to the north and south walls and prevent the roof from spreading. The roofing is composite asphalt shingles. The hip rafters appear relatively straight, but need to be reinforced to support the additional load of the solar panels. Install 2—2x8x8'long beams perpendicular to the hip rafters,approximately 4' out from the corners of the house, spanning between the west and south walls, the south and east walls and between the east and north walls resting on the attic floor, as shown below. Support and secure the beams to the side of the top plates of the walls with Simpson Skewed 45°Face-Mount Hangers #SUR/L26-2—Note: right and left hangers are needed for each beam. Another option to support the beams is to screw 3"x3"x 3/16"x12" long steel angle to the double top plates with the bottom leg of the angle resting on the floor boards. Use 4—2'/2" TimberLok screws to secure the angles to the top plates. Install a vertical 2x4 post from the top of the 2—2x8 beams to the bottom of the hip rafters and toe-screw the post to the hip rafters and beams. North O Install 2-2x8x8' beams 0 shown in red. Based on my calculations and a PV solar panel unit weight of 46± Ibs, with the a chment points of the arrays placed at a maximum of 52"on center and staggered to minimize th load to any one rafter,the reinforced roof framing, as outlined above, is adequate to support th proposed PV solar arrays and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Buildi g Code for the City of Northampton.
