Vreeland Design Associates Re: Adam Marks, 35 Hinckley St, Florence, MA: Structural assessment of existing house roof to support proposed PV solar array. I have investigated the house roof framing for the proposed PV solar panel installation. The 2- story, 26'x 38' gabled roof house was constructed around the late 1800s/early 1900s. 22 PV solar panels are to be installed on the south facing roof. The house roof is framed with full dimension 2x5 rafters installed 24"on-center spanning 12'-8"with a 10/12 roof pitch. The full dimension 2x4 attic joists, installed 16"on-center, are attached to the top of the wall preventing the roof from spreading. The roofing is composite asphalt shingles. The house south 2x5 rafters have to long of a span to support the proposed solar panels and meet the requirements of the current building code. Reinforce the existing south rafters by sistering a new 2x8x12', centered on the existing rafter span, screwed to the existing rafters with 2—2-7/8" HeadLok, FlatLok TrussLok-Z screws at 12"on-center. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed array including the installation of snow guards along the eave of the roof. Based on my calculations and a PV solar panel unit weight of 44± lbs, with the attachment points of the PV solar panel array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter,the reinforced south rafters as outlined above are adequate to support the proposed PV solar panel array,the snow guards and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code for the City of Northampton.
