Vreeland Design Associates Re: Peter Blanchette,41 Valley St,Northampton, MA: Structural assessment of existing house roof to support proposed solar array. I have investigated the roof framing of the house for the proposed PV solar panel installation. The 26'x 30', 2-story house was built around 1900.20 PV solar panels are to be installed on the southwest facing roof. The rafters are full dimension 2x6 installed at 24"on-center, spanning 12'- 6"with an 8.5/12 pitch. It appears the attic floor joists are 2x6 installed 16"on-center.The rafters are attached to the floor framing preventing the roof from spreading. The roofing is composite asphalt shingles. The existing 2x6 rafters on the southwest side of the house supporting the solar panels have too long of a span and need to be reinforced to support the solar panels and meet the requirements of the current building code.Reinforce the rafters by replacing the existing 18"±non-bearing kneewall with a structural 2x6 kneewall. Secure a 2x6 plate to the floor with the front edge of the 2x6 in the same location as the existing kneewall. Screw a 2x4 plate to the bottom of the roof framing with the front edges of the 2x4 top plate and the 2x6 floor plate aligned. Install vertical 2x6 studs at 24"on-center with the top of the studs notched to fit over the 2x4 top plate which will prevent the studs from sliding up the angled 2x4 plate. Toe screw the studs to the 2x4 and 2x6 plates. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed solar array. Based on my calculations and on the specified PV solar panel unit weight of 40f lbs,with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter,the reinforced rafters, as outlined above, are adequate to support the proposed PV solar array and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code for the City of Northampton.
