I have investigated the existing house roof framing for the proposed PV solar panel installation. According to the Assessor's property card,the 2-story, 24'x 28' house was constructed in 1925. 16 PV solar panels are to be installed on the southeast facing roof. The original rafters are full dimension 2x6 installed approximately 24"on-center, spanning 11'-8"with a roof pitch of 8/12. The rafters are supported on 2x4 exterior walls with 2x6 attic floor joists installed 16"on-center secured to the walls to prevent the roof from spreading. During a recent renovation the attic joists were sistered with new 2x6 and a 2x4 kneewall install approximately 5' in from the exterior walls. The roofing is composite asphalt shingles. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed array. Based on my calculations and a PV solar panel unit weight of 45±lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter,the existing roof framing is adequate to support the proposed PV solar array and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code for the City of Northampton.
