Vreeland Design Associates Re: Megan Zinn, 72 Cherry St,Northampton, MA: Structural assessment of existing house roof to support proposed solar array. I have investigated the existing roof framing in the area of the proposed PV solar panel installation. The 1-1/2-story, 24'x 32' cape style house, with a 28' long shed dormer on the southwest facing roof was constructed around 1900. 14 PV solar panels are to be installed on the shed dormer roof. The dormer roof framing could not be viewed directly, however based on measurements and the rafters used for the main roof which appears to be Douglas-fir, the rafters appear to be full dimension 2x6 installed at 24"to 26" on-center, spanning 11'-8"with a roof pitch of 1/12. The dormer roofing is an EPDM membrane. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed solar array. Based on my calculations and a PV solar panel unit weight of 40±lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed on each rafter, the existing dormer roof framing is adequate to support the proposed PV solar array and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code for the City of Northampton.
