Crimson Clover Farm 209 Spring ' St Barn Florence, Ma 01062 •=‘ Northeast Solar Vreeland Design Associates An integrative approach to design engineering and site planning Date: November 5,2021 To: Justin Annis Northeast Solar 136 Elm Street Hatfield, MA 01038 From: David Vreeland, P.E. Vreeland Design Associates Re: Crimson&Clover Farm, 215 Spring St,Northampton, MA: Structural assessment of existing barn roof to support proposed solar array. I have investigated the roof framing of the 1-3/4-story 30'x 45' timber framed barn. The barn appears to have been built around the late 1800s or early 1900s. 31 PV solar panels are to be installed on the east facing roof. The barn is a 3-bay,4-bent timber frame with bents approximately 15'±on-center. Each bent is made up of three(3)7x7x16' posts with 7x8 beams spanning between the center posts that support a full second floor 10' above the ground floor. 7x7 tie-beams are secured to the top of the posts with 7x7 eave beams spanning between the exterior wall posts. 3x4 diagonal bracing is installed between the posts and beams. The full dimension 3x5 rafters are installed 24"on-center support on a 6x6 purlin beam located mid-span. 6x6 purlin posts are perpendicular to the roof slope and angle down to the 7x7 tie-beams, landing above the 3x4 diagonal braces of the center posts.A 4x6 diagonal brace is attached near the top of the purlin post on the downward facing side of the post and extends down parallel to the roof and is mortised into the tie-beam near the exterior post to secure the purlin beam and post in position. 3x4 diagonal bracing are installed between the purlin beams and posts. The second floor framing and the tie- beams prevent the roof from spreading. The roofing is corrugated metal. I have reviewed the mounting details for the PV solar array. CorruSlide mounting brackets will be secured to the metal roof corrugations for mounting the PV solar panel array. At each CorruSlide location install a 1%2"x#12 roofing screw into the roof sheathing on both side of the corrugation. Based on my calculations and a PV solar panel unit weight of 40t lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 36"on-center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter, the existing roof framing is adequate to support the proposed PV solar array and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code for the City of Northampton.
