Vreeland Design Associates Re: Sam Ostroff, Salmon Studios, 28 N. Maple St, Florence, MA: Structural assessment of existing roof structure to support proposed ballasted solar arrays. On 10/21/21, I conducted a site visit to determine the roof framing details in the area of the proposed PV ballasted solar panel arrays. The 10,842 ft2 3-wythe brick building appears to have been constructed in the late 1800s—early 1900s, see the aerial image below: 80 PV Solar Arrays -• W E .•,� �w. S - 80 PV solar panel ballasted arrays are to be installed on roof in the area outlined in red on the above photo. The roof framing supporting the solar array is made up of a timber framed section starting at the north exterior wall spanning 23'-6"to a 6' tall steel girder truss and then a section framed with steel modified Fan design gable roof trusses spanning 26'-6"to the next 6' tall steel girder truss. The 7'/2"x 13" select structural Douglas-fir and the steel roof trusses are installed 10' on-center with a slope of 1/12. The 7'/2"x 13"timbers are reinforced with two 7/8"diameter steel rods attached near the ends of the beams and tensioned around a 10"cast metal standoff located mid-span of the beams. 2'/2"x 6/8 tongue& grooved planking is installed on top of the timbers and roof trusses. The 6' riveted girder trusses are fabricated with double 3"x 2"x 5/16"angle for the top and bottom chords, 2%2"x 2'/2"x 5/16"verticals and 2"x2"x1/4"diagonals. The girder truss spans 20' to riveted steel I-beam columns. The original built-up gravel ballasted roof appears to have weighed approximately 15 psf based on the 66 tons of stone gravel that was removed during the recent re-roofing project. ''Y2"plywood sheathing was installed over the original planking to provide a smooth surface for the new adhered EPDM membrane. Based on my calculations The roof is capable of supporting a 45 psf snow load and a 25 psf dead load. The proposed PV solar panels will be secured to a ballasted rack system using 1 to 6—32 lb concrete ballast blocks in each of the rack's ballast pans. The ballast pans are located 5'-8"o.c. along the length of the solar panels and 4'-11"o.c. along the width of the panels. The ballasted array, designed by Ecolibrium Solar, Athens, OH, has designed the arrays for a 117 mph basic wind speed Vaf and 40 psf ground snow in accordance with the 2015 IBC building code. Based on a solar panel unit weight of 41± lbs,the maximum equivalent weight of the ballasted racks and solar panels is 9.04±psf and the weight of the EPDM roofing membrane, insulation,and roof planking is approximately 12.5 psf for a total approximate dead load of 21.54±psf. Based on the above information and my engineering calculations, the existing roof framing is adequate to support the proposed ballasted PV solar arrays and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code for the City of Northampton.
