Vreeland Design Associates Re: John Treworgy, 59 Maple St, Florence, MA: Structural assessment of contemporary timber frame addition to existing house to support proposed solar array. I have reviewed the structural framing plans prepared by Fire Tower Engineered Timber, Delran, NJ, dated 12/3/19, for the 2-story 24'x 70' gable roof timber frame addition and investigated the roof framing for the proposed PV solar panel installation. The addition, constructed in 2020, is attached to the back of the existing 188O's 2-story boarding house. 34 PV solar panels are to be installed on the south facing roof of the addition. The addition roof is framed with 8x10 eastern white pine#1 or better timbers designed as a crossed scissors truss with king post, installed 10' on-center, spanning 24' with the top chord at an 8/12 pitch. 10%2" SIP panels are screwed to the trusses. Standing seam metal roofing is secured to the SIP panels with the south facing panels secured with the clips installed 6"-9"on-center. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed solar array. Based on my calculations and a PV solar panel unit weight of 44± lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 42"on center and staggered to spread out the load, the addition timber roof framing is adequate to support the proposed PV solar array and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code for the City of Northampton.
