Vreeland Design Associates Re: Tom Sylvan, 63 Park Hill Rd, Florence, MA: Structural assessment of existing house roof to support proposed solar array. I have investigated the existing roof framing of the 28'x 48', 1-1/2-story split-level ranch style house with a walkout basement garage. Based on the Assessor's records the house was constructed in 1983. 28 PV solar panels are to be installed on the front south facing roof. The rafters are 2x8 installed at 16"on-center, spanning 13'-6"over a 24' long section and spanning 11'-6"over the remaining 24' with the longer overhang sheltering the front entry. The roof pitch is 5.5/12. 2x6 ceiling joists are attached to the bottom of the rafters and prevent the roof from spreading. The roofing is composite asphalt shingles. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed solar arrays. Based on my calculations and on the specified PV solar panel unit weight of 45± Ibs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter, the existing rafters are adequate to support the proposed PV solar array and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code for the City of Northampton.
