Vreeland Design Associates Re: Simon Ahtaridis, 43 Finn St, Northampton, MA: Structural assessment of new house roof to support proposed solar array. I have reviewed the architectural plans, prepared by Siegfrid Porth, architect, dated 6/27/16, the roof truss designs, and the framing details on the new house roof for the proposed PV solar panel installation. 62 PV solar panels are to be installed on the back east facing roof of the house. The roof framing of the new, 38'x 87', 2-story, colonial style house are 2x6 top chord piggy-back design roof trusses, designed and manufactured by UFP Belchertown, LLC, installed at 24"on- center, spanning 38' with an 8/12 roof pitch. The trusses have been designed for a 35 psf roof snow load, a 15 psf dead load on the top chord, and a 117 mph Vuit basic wind speed. The roofing is composite asphalt shingles. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed array. Based on a PV solar panel unit weight of 40± Ibs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one roof truss, the roof framing is adequate to support the proposed PV solar array and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code.
