Robin Freedenseld 188 Warner St , ' .411111411°1111'e, Florence, Ma 01062 Northeast Solar Vreeland Design Associates An integrative approach to design engineering and site planning Date: July 28, 2021 To: Justin Annis NorthEast Solar 136 Elm Street Hatfield, MA 01038 From: David Vreeland, P.E. Vreeland Design Associates Re: Robin Freedenfeld, 188 Warner St, Florence, MA: Structural assessment of existing house roof to support proposed solar array. I have investigated the existing roof framing in the area of the proposed PV solar panel installation. The contemporary 2-story, 34'x 31' main section with a 26'x 14' extension off the west gable and attached garage was constructed in 1985. 22 PV solar panels are to be installed on the back south facing roof of the main roof and 3 solar panels on the south facing roof of the 19' long popped-up section of roof. The main roof which begins at the top of the first floor wall is framed with 2x12 rafters installed at 16"on-center, spanning 14'±with an 8/12 pitch to a 16" steel beam that appears to span the 31' length of the main building and appears to be supported on a post 19' in from the west gable end. The main roof continues up the ridge which is approximately 10' in from the front north wall. The 19' long section of popped-up roof, the south wall is supported on the steel beam, is framed with 2x4 Fink designed roof trusses installed 24"on-center, spanning 14' with an 8/12 pitch. The roofing is composite asphalt shingles. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed PV solar arrays. Based on my calculations and a PV solar panel unit weight of 45+ lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter and truss, the roof framing of the main roof and popped-up section are adequate to support the proposed PV solar arrays and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code for the City of Northampton. Not just the worst storms in years, , / / but the worst storms in 40 years. High winds capable of it ripping panels from a roof, and snowfalls weighing „ ,i i / enough to buckle a panel frame. --,le XR Rails are the structural backbone preventing these results. They resist uplift, protect .., i , against buckling and safely and efficiently transfer loads into the building structure. Their superior spanning capability „, i „ requires fewer roof attachments, - :„..,,,,,,411% ,, reducing the number of roof . %pi* penetrations and the amount 111 of installation time. - - ; *... - 41%16, Force-Stabilizing Curve ' Sloped roofs generate both vertical and lateral forces on mounting rails which can cause them to bend and twist. The curved shape of XR Rails is specially designed to increase strength in both 44///ii ' directions while resisting the twisting. This unique feature ensures greater security during extreme weather and a longer system lifetime. 4471 Compatible with Flat&Pitched Roofs Corrosion-Resistant Materials XR Rails are IronRidge offers All XR Rails are made of 6000-series k ncompatible with a range of tilt leg aluminum alloy, then protected with an FlashFoot and options for flat anodized finish.Anodizing prevents surfaceIl i other pitched roof roof mounting and structural corrosion, while also providing attachments. applications. a more attractive appearance. 3 1 Tech Brief XR Rail Family The XR Rail Family offers the strength of a curved rail in three targeted sizes.
