Vreeland Design Associates Re: Garrett Adams, 148 Crescent St, Northampton, MA: Structural assessment of existing house roof to support proposed solar array. I have investigated the existing roof framing for the proposed PV solar panel installation. The original 26'x 34' 2-story house was constructed around 1925. 20 PV solar panels are to be installed on the back south facing roof of the house. The house roof is framed with full dimension 2x5 rafters installed 20"-21"on-center, spanning 12'-6"with a 7.5/12 roof slope. The rafters are attached to a 2x4 plate supported on the attic floor framing preventing the roof from spreading. The roofing is composite asphalt shingles. The south 2x6 rafters that will support the solar panels will need to be reinforced to be able to support the proposed solar panels and meet the structural requirements of the current MA State Building Code. Reinforce the existing rafters by sistering new 2x6x10', centered along the length of the existing rafters, and nailed with 2-12d nails at 12"on-center or 2 - 2'/2"TimberLok screws at 16"on-center. For the six(6)rafters that have an electrical wire passing through the middle of the rafter, reinforce those rafters with 2x8x10' centered along the length of the existing rafters. At the location of the wire, drill Y2"hole located 2'/2"down from the top edge of the 2x8 and then cut a '/2"wide notch from the top edge to the drilled hole to allow the 2x8 to slip past the wire. Use the same nail/screw schedule as for the 2x6s to attach the 2x8s to the existing rafters. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed solar array. Based on my calculations and on the specified PV solar panel unit weight of 45± lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 42"on-center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter, the reinforced house roof framing, as outlined above, is adequate to support the proposed PV solar array and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code for the City of Northampton.
