Roof mounted solar array with '` ''•' 8x LGmodules _, Northampton Music Foundat 141 South St 4 Northampton, Ma 01060 Northeast Solar Vreeland Design Associates An integrative approach to design engineering and site planning Date: March 19, 2021 To: Justin Annis Northeast Solar 136 Elm Street Hatfield, MA 01038 From: David Vreeland, P.E. Vreeland Design Associates Re: Northampton Community Music Center, 139 South St, Northampton, MA: Structural assessment of existing roof to support proposed solar arrays. I have investigated the existing roof framing for the proposed PV solar panel installation. The 2- story, 48'x 63' with 33'x 22', 2-story ell off the center front of the building was constructed around 1930. 24 PV solar panels are to be installed on the main southwest facing hip roof and 24 solar panels on the southwest facing gable roof of the ell. The hip roof of the main building is framed with 2'/4"x 6'/2" installed 16"-18"on-center, spanning 12' with an approximate 12/12 pitch. The hip rafters, based on the length of the jack rafter plumb cuts appears to 5x10. The hip rafters are attached to the corners of a 20'x 36' near flat area of roof. The ell rafters appear to be 21/4"x 7" installed 16"-18"on-center, spanning 15' with an approximate 12/12 pitch. The rafters appear straight and true with no significant visible deflection. The roofing is composite asphalt shingles. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed arrays. Due to the near 45 degree slope of the roof and the glass surface of the solar panels, from ASCE 7-10 Minimum Design Loads for Building and Other Structures, page 36, Figure 7-2c, the roof slope factor for a cold roof, unobstructed slippery surfaces with a 12/12 slope is 0.5 of the minimum flat roof snow load. Based on my calculations, using a roof snow load of 25 psf and a PV solar panel unit weight of 41+ lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at every other rafter and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter, Ow existing southwest main roof framing and the southwest rafters of the ell are adequate to support the proposed PV solar arrays and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code for the City of Northampton.
