Northampton, Mass. 01060 Herman & Jean Smith 42 Bliss Street Northampton, MA 01060 Map 23C-Lot80 On December 23 at approx lopm I was called by Northampton Fire Department to 42 Bliss Street Map 23C-Lot 80 for a flooded house. When I arrived I found that the basement was full with water to a height over 5 ' and that the furnace was completely covered. On the first floor water was flowing from the ceiling above and most of the plaster ceilings had fallen down. The DPW had to be called to shut the water off at the street and the electric company was called to disconnect the meter. I took photos of the house and posted a unsafe structure on the house. The daughter of the people who owned the house was on the scene and said that her parents were separated but she would try to locate her mother to secure the house. She obtained a phone number and called her Mother , I spoke to Mrs. Smith on the phone and explained that the water and electricity had been shut off. She informed me that she thought that she had insurance on the property but was not sure. I informed Mrs. Smith and her daughter that before anyone could reoccupy the house that the electrical systems, heating systems would have to be inspected because of the damage that the water might have caused. Firefighters informed me that in their estimation the water had been flowing for several days , this estimation was based on the large amount of ice that was present.
