Vreeland Design Associates Re: David Marshall,45 Marshall St,Northampton, MA: Structural assessment of existing house and porch roofs to support proposed solar arrays. I have investigated the existing roof framing for the proposed PV solar panel installations. The original 26'x 28' 2-story house with a 10'x 14' finished enclosed porch off the east gable end was constructed around the early 1900s. 13 PV solar panels are to be installed on the south facing roof of the house and 5 solar panels on the east facing shed roof of the enclosed porch.The house roof is framed with 2x6( 13/4"x 5'/z")rafters installed at 21"on-center, spanning 12'-8"with an 8/12 roof slope. 2x6 attic joists, installed 16"on-center are attached to the sides of the 2x4 wall studs just under of the 2x4 top plate that the rafters are attached to and prevents the roof from spreading. The shed roof framing of the 1-story enclosed porch was not accessible,but based on the span and my experience with other homes of this style and era I expect the rafters are the same size and spacing as the house rafters. The size and spacing of the porch rafters will need to be confirmed when the new roofing is installed prior to the installation of the solar panels. The house and porch roofing is composite asphalt shingles which will be replaced with new shingles. Snow guard are to be install on the solar panels. The house 2x6 south rafters that will support the solar panels will need to be reinforced to be able to support the proposed solar panels and meet the structural requirements of the current MA State Building Code. Reinforce the existing rafters by sistering a new 2x6x12', centered along the existing rafter span, and nailed with 2-12d nails at 12"on-center or 2 -2'/2" TimberLok screws at 16"on-center. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed solar array. Based on my calculations and on the specified PV solar panel unit weight of 38f lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of every other reinforced house rafter and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter,the reinforced house roof framing is adequate to support the proposed PV solar array, snow guards, and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code for the Town of Northampton.
