Re: Inspection of Residential Structure for Solar PV—43 Oak Street,Florence,MA
This letter summarizes the inspection and analysis of the residence located at 43 Oak Street in Florence to
determine if the structure is adequate to support a roof mounted solar PV system.
An inspection of the roof and supporting structure was performed on January 16,2020.The main roof of the
structure is constructed of trusses and the original truss drawings were available.
The trusses and supporting structure were analyzed for the additional dead load of the proposed system:three
rows of solar PV modules mounted in portrait orientation. Each row of modules would be mounted on two rails
that are attached with penetrating mounting feet. Based on the analysis,the existing structures will accommodate
the additional load of the system. The solar mounting feet are to be staggered and spaced so that the loading is
evenly distributed between the trusses.
The attachment feet must use two smaller fasteners to reduce the combined loading as compared to that which
would occur with a single fastener solar mounting foot.
The following combination of parts from Ecofasten will accommodate the required attachment and use two
smaller fasteners per mounting foot:
• QF-BASE-AL-M Rectangular base plate with 1.5" stud
• XHD003B, 3"long screws,Qty 2 per bracket
• QF-FLASH-BLACK-812,flashing(or QF-FLASH-MILL-812 which is same flashing but mill finish)
• L-102-3, 3"Aluminum L-foot with 2 slots(or SCL-101-3,which is same 3"L-foot but with open slot).
The QF-Base is to be mounted vertically to the rafter or truss.
It is my professional opinion,based on my review and inspection,that the installation of the solar PV system as
proposed on the south side of the roof meets the minimum criteria of the Massachusetts State Building Code 780
CMR Ninth Edition.
