Re: Brian Adams, 9 Hayward Rd Florence, MA: Structural assessment of house and garage
roofs to support proposed solar arrays.
On 9/7/16, I conducted a site visit and investigated the existing roof framing in the areas of the
proposed PV solar panel installations. The 1-story rambling ranch style house with a 2-bay
attached garage was constructed in 1949. In the fall of 2016, 22 solar panels were installed on the
main south facing roof of the house and 5 panels on the south facing garage roof. This letter is for
the proposed installation of 2 additional solar panels on the south roof of the garage,4 solar panels
on the east facing roof of the garage and 2 solar panels on the west facing roof of the 18' wide ell
off the westerly end of the front south facing main house. The roof of the 18' wide ell is framed
with 2x6(1-5/8"x 5-5/8") Douglas—fir with a grade No. 1 stamp, installed at 18"on-center,
spanning 8'-8"with a roof pitch of 6.5/12. 2x6 ceiling joists, installed at the same spacing as the
rafters, are attached to the rafters at the top of the exterior walls and prevent the roof from
spreading. The roof framing of the 21' long x 23' deep 2-bay attached garage is made up of a 14'
wide gable roof running 21' east-west and a 21' wide gable by 9' deep on the north side of the 14'
gable.A site built 2x6 girder truss, approximately 5' tall, running east-west forms the ridge of the
14' wide gable and supports the garage's south rafters and the valleys and jack rafters on the north
side of the girder truss. The south rafters supporting the existing 5 solar panels are 2x6 Douglas-fir
installed at 18"on-center, spanning 6'-8",with a roof pitch of 8/12. The roofing on both the house
and garage are composite asphalt shingles.
I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed solar panels. Based on my calculations and
on a PV panel unit weight of 40f lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum
of 4'-6"on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter. the existing roof framing
is adequate-17s`p ort the proposed additional PV solar paneR on both the house and garage roofs
and the snow load requiremen, the current State Building Code.
Please contact me if you have any questions or need additional information.
Sincerely, ,I,,A°Ess7o
