1.Introduction and Discussion
The church sanctuary is currently heated by two forced air furnaces located at the front and back of the
sanctuary basement. These furnaces vent combustion gases through the two sets of chimneys at those
same locations. Over the years the chimneys have deteriorated to the point where they can no longer
be relied on safely venting furnaces. Inspections with video equipment have shown that the existing
chimneys are on the verge of failure and not repairable due to the continuing collapse of the ceramic
linings and poor condition of existing brick and mortar and should be abandoned to avoid further
damage to their structural integrity.
• The new furnaces have their own internal air handlers that blow the heated air from the
furnace into the existing ductwork and upstairs into the sanctuary. These furnaces will be in
the same location as the originals in order to minimize costs for modifications to the
ductwork.
• The existing two furnaces are inefficient and can only be vented through chimneys.
Modern, efficient furnaces can be vented horizontally through exterior walls using small
vent piping and don't require chimneys.
• The appearance of outside vent piping must be approved by the Massachusetts Historical
Commission and the Northampton Central Business Architectural Commission.
• The project should be completed before the start of the heating season.

2. Description:
Eight furnaces
• The existing furnaces are to be removed.
• Two sets of two high-efficiency furnaces would be installed with modified air
ducting at the front of the basement and two sets of two furnaces with modified
ducting at the back.
• For the front furnaces exhaust venting would be through four 4" holes, one for each
furnace, drilled in the outside wall at location "B". Intake venting would be at
location "D"through four 3" pipes attached to a louver installed flush in the
window frame in a painted plywood panel.
• For the back furnaces, the four 3" exhaust pipes and two existing boiler exhaust
pipes would exit through an existing basement window at location "Cy. The four 3"
intake pipes and two existing boiler intake pipes would be attached to a louver
installed flush in a painted plywood panel in the next adjacent window to the right.
• All painting will be dark brown to match the existing church trim color.
• The church will provide landscaping and security grating as needed to improve the
aesthetics at exhaust pipe locations.
• Locations"B", "C", and "D" interiors are unfinished basement spaces. Location "A"
interior is a finished basement space.

1. Using either of the two basement windows at Location"A"for venting was not recommended.
The first window is in the men's bathroom The second window is in the rec room.
f„
The foundation wall between the two windows is accessed through a space over the closets in the
rec room. This space contains plumbing pipes for the men's bathroom. Placing of 3" piping and
gaining access to the interior of the foundation wall is not feasible.
p
It should also be noted that directly
above the rear furnace location is the
r- room containing the organ pipes.

Subject: RE: First Churches of Northampton, 129 Main Street, Northampton, MA- Preservation
Restriction Review (M.G.L. Chapter 184, Section 31-33)
1 have reviewed the PNF describing the proposed heating system replacement at the First Churches
of Northampton. It is understood that the two existing gas furnaces will be removed and replaced with
eight high efficiency units which will all require direct outside venting. I approve of the proposed
furnace replacement under the terms of the preservation restriction agreement(M.G.L. Chapter 184,
Section 31-33). 1 will also provide you with a written letter of PR approval. Please feel free to proceed
with this work immediately based upon this email approval.
