Rebate Application and Permitting After the initial$175 Deposit is received,Spartan Solar will:1)schedule the engineer(if required),2)file for the building permit and 3)apply for the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center(CEC)solar hot water rebate.Rebate approval can take 3-5 weeks.If an engineer,is required,we will hold off on permit and rebate application until after the engineer's review. 2. Florence, MA Dear Spartan, On August 27h, I was on site at 278 Rocky Hill Rd. to examine and m:atyosure the roof framing system in anticipation of the solar hot water panel system installation u are planning. The plan is to install solar hot water panels at the eastern end of the south side of the house, above the existing solar photovoltaic panels. The panels will be installed using a flat mount system,without a raised racking system. The solar hot-water panels and mounting system will add approximately 41bs. per square ft. to the roof dead load. The International Residential Code with the Massachusetts Amendments and ASCE-7 (Minimum Design Loads for Buildings)were used to determine the roof snow and wind load requirements. i The ground snow load for Florence (Northampton) is 40 psf. The calculated sloped roof snow load for the areas covered with asphalt shingles was 31 psf(rough surface, cold roof, 5/12 pitch). Where the panels are mounted,the snow load for the"slippery surface"was calculated as 24.6 psf. At the east end of the buildings where the panels are to be installed, the roof framing system consists of 2x6 rafters at 16 in. on center, a 2x6 ridge board, 2x6 ceiling joists at 16" o.c., and 1x8 struts nailed to the rafters at the ridge and to the ceiling joists. The roof framing system was analyzed as a truss using the RISA 2D finite elements program. The results showed that the roof framing was adequate when analyzed with the new system installed and the code required loads and load combinations. The code specified design wind speed for Florence is 117 mph(V„it). For components,the wind uplift on the panels was 29.4 psf. (Simplified Method- Components and Cladding, ASCE 7-16). In order to resist ,u liftthe panels should be attached to the rafters as follows: p P I Attach the Solar Hot Water Panels at corners with(1) 1/a" diameter framing screw with 2 in. minimum penetration into the top of the rafters.
