Vreeland Design Associates Re: Laurie Marshall and Sandra Duclos, 21 Claire Ave, Florence, MA: Structural assessment of existing house roofs to support proposed solar arrays. I have investigated the existing roof framing for the proposed PV solar panel installations. The 24'x 34', 1-story ranch style house with a 5'x 18' entry ell off the front southeast face was constructed in 1963. 12 PV solar panels are to be installed on the southeast facing roof of the house and 3 solar panels on the southwest facing roof of the ell. The rafters on both sections are 2x6, installed 16" on-center, spanning 11'-8"on the house and 8'-8"on the ell. The house roof slope is 5/12 and the ell roof is sloped at 4.5/12. 2x6 ceiling joists are attached to the bottom of the rafters and prevent the roofs from spreading. The roofing is composite asphalt shingles. The house rafters supporting the solar panels will need to be reinforced to limit deflection under full snow load conditions and to be in compliance with the current building code. Install vertical 2x4 bracing 2' back from the exterior wall and attach the 2x4s to the same side of the rafters as the ceiling joists with 3 —TimberLok, or equivalent structural screws with the bottom of the 2x4 resting directly on the top of the 2x6 ceiling joists. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed arrays. Based on my calculations and a PV panel unit weight of 46f lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter,the existing ell rafters and the reinforced rafters, as outlined above, are adequate to support the proposed PV solar panel arrays and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code. When engaged in this work as an employee of PV Squared on a PV Squared project site, activities of PV Squared employees are covered under the General Liability Insurance maintained by the Cooperative. It is the intent of this policy to provide clarity to installation situations where the applicable codes and regulations are unclear, ambiguous, or silent. It is possible that a municipal building or electrical inspector could interpret the codes and regulations in a manner that differs from what appears here. But this policy sets out, in writing, how the cooperative interprets legal work requirements and unclear details. It is an internal consensus working model, intended to be revised and improved from time to time. As a general matter, a city's or town's Building Commissioner is charged with enforcing the State Building Code, Plumbing and Gas Code, Electrical Code and Architectural Access Code. The commissioner addresses concerns about the safety, accessibility and security of construction of homes and businesses. The commissioner also enforces zoning bylaws. In accordance with Massachusetts General Law, employees of the cooperative who perform electrical tasks and activities must hold a Massachusetts journeymen's electrician license or be under the direct supervision of such licensed personnel. We are a company that values training and education. We make certain that every individual is qualified for the roles and responsibilities that they assume. It is our policy to pay for the employees travel and training time and cost of the education, including CSL and Journeyman and Master Electrician classes. As an electrical contractor we are furthermore guided by the January 30, 2009 Massachusetts Board of State Examiners of Electricians (BSEE)judgements, and rulings that have followed. We pay strict adherence to these mandates and all electrical work is conducted by an electrician and an electrician's apprentice in a 1:1 ratio. We also understand that non-electrical tasks associated with a Solar installation can be completed by non-electrical workers, such as CSLs and others. I have attached our installation policy for your review, as well as a list of example non-electrical tasks.
