Vreeland Design Associates Re: Mike Stiles, 63 Ridgewood Terrace,Northampton, MA: Structural assessment of existing house and porch roofs to support proposed solar arrays. I have investigated the roof framing for the proposed PV solar panel installations. The 2-story, 24'x 26' house was constructed in 1927. 18 PV solar panels are to be installed on the front south facing roof of the house and 3 solar panels on south facing roof of the entry porch. The house roof is framed with full dimension 2x6 installed 20"f on-center, spanning 11'-6"with an 8.5/12 roof slope. The attic joists appear to be 2x6 and are attached to the bottom of the rafters and prevent the roof from spreading. The roof framing of the 8'x 24' entry porch was not accessible. However, based on the rafter span of 7'-6"and experience with similar aged homes, the minimum rafter size will be full dimension 2x4 installed 24"on-center. The slope of the porch roof is 3/12. The roofing is composite asphalt shingles.Note: it is recommended that snow guards be installed on the house roof to reduce the sliding snow falling on the porch roof below. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed array. Based on my calculations, including the installation of snow guards on the house roof, and a PV solar panel unit weight of 48f lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of every-other rafter and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter, the existing roof framing of both the house roof and porch roof are adequate to support the proposed PV solar arrays and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code.
