The nomination will now be submitted to the National Register of Historic Places at the National Park Service in Washington,DC, for final consideration and designation. "The Massachusetts Historical Commission is dedicated to preserving the Commonwealth's rich historic, architectural, archaeological, and cultural resources,"Secretary Galvin said."Inclusion of the Pomeroy Terrace Historic District in the National Register demonstrates the importance of the neighborhood and provides a source of pride to its residents and the wider community of Northampton, which is rich in historic resources."Pomeroy Terrace Historic District is one of four historic resources around the Commonwealth approved for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places by the Massachusetts Historical Commission at this meeting. Secretary Galvin serves as Chairman of the 17-member board, which meets regularly and considers historic resources eligible for the National Register four times a year. Pomeroy Terrace Historic District is located just east of downtown Northampton and contains contributing resources dating from 1661 to 1967.From important early gravestones in Bridge Street Cemetery to an encyclopedic collection of 19a-centray American architecture on the streets on and around Pomeroy Terrace, the largely residential historic district conveys the broader history of the development of Northampton over three centuries. A number of well-preserved mid-19keentury houses designed by Northampton architect William Fenno Pratt are particularly noteworthy. The National Register is the nation's official listing of significant historic resources. In Massachusetts, there are more than 70,000 properties listed in the National Register. The Massachusetts Historical Commission has been administering the National Register of Historic Places program in Massachusetts since 1966. The Massachusetts Historical Commission is the office of the State Historic Preservation Officer and the State Archaeologist. It was established in 1963 to identify, evaluate, and protect important historical and archaeological assets of the Commonwealth.Visit our website to learn more about the Commission's programs(www.sec.stste.ma.us/mhc). -End- State House, Room 337,Boston, Massachusetts 02133 Pomefoy Terrace Historic District-Wikipedia bttps://en.wikipediaorg/wiki/Pomcmy_Terrace_Historic_District WIKIPEDIA Ce.wws a•la2oN n,alssw Pomeroy Terrace Historic District 'rhe Pomeroy T<rratt Hinaair tyietrim a a historic distrim on the art ride of downtown Northampton, Pomeroy Terrace Historic District Marehuxtts.Imted south of Bridge Sherr most of the main ordered right-of-any.it was one of the uba mast desirable residential rceighborhoods of the 19th memory, retaking many fine examples of madernal U.S.Nafimel Register of Historic Pieces orientation from that period. It was listed on the Natio.)Radista d Hist9ric Pierer a 20181'1 U.S.Historic dabkt Description and history Northampton was ended he 165x,sod the Pomeroy Terrace ares wa home to one of its fieft civic irudmtimu, Me,Bridge Strait Cemetery, land at Me northern end rthe historic district.Early deabpment was limited to Bridge Street,an extension of Main Sheet nut is now the major cert-west road in Me ems.The town developed milt elriallyin the mid-19th cammy after the amval of the north-south raihuad, end the oma ria[ of the ra red, anybody Inge ag icWnnal doh and Meta, was subdivided for development. Its most rapid 1w period of gewrh was Interest about 1855 and 181o.1-1 Coags Charm bWNlps.Par.roy Terrace The histone dinner,is defined primarily by lee north-south nada of Pomeroy Termer and Hawley Broad.and '- rs aboot 32 arra(ts be)in sive.Ther[kin streets art joined by few.nnating rants, all of which hes ---- --- — hietodMly in nificant wnMbming butIM. s.
