The installer is also responsible for the structural integrity of the finished sign. 1. The front face of the Price Watcher display that includes the air intake/exhaust and LED digit faces shall not be blocked by any part of the metal sign cabinet or covered with trim or frame (see diagram at bottom of page). 2. The Price Watcher display is a component in a custom-designed sign cabinet and is not intended for stand-alone use. The custom sign cabinet must provide protection from water for all but the face of the Price Watcher display. 3. The Price Watcher display may be mounted into a cutout of the proper dimensions from the front or it may be mounted in the interior of a larger sign cabinet with the flange on the inside. A continuous bead of non-hardening caulk, suitable adhesive or suitable double-sided tape should be used between the flange and the mounting surface to prevent water intrusion. 4. The custom sign cabinet should include a framework to provide internal support of the Price Watcher display. The display may be fastened to the custom sign cabinet by drilling through the flange and using screws or pop rivets. Use a minimum of four screws or rivets to anchor the sign in place. The back of the Price Watcher display may be attached to internal supports using drill screws through the back of the Price Watcher cabinet. One square inch in each corner of the Price Watcher cabinet is clear on the inside to prevent drill screws from penetrating components (see Figure 1). WARNING! Disconnect power to all electrical components before retro-fitting. 1. In most cases, no airflow is required around the backs and sides of the Price Watcher sign. It is only necessary to create clearance for sign drop-in placement. Remove lamps, lamp holders, tubing, and any other electrical and mechanical components to allow for 3.25" depth of clearance. If lamps are located behind or near the back of the Price Watcher, then ventilation should be added to the sign structure. 2. The Price Watcher display may be mounted into a cutout of the proper dimensions from the front or it may be mounted in the interior of a larger sign cabinet with the flange on the inside. A continuous bead of non-hardening caulk, suitable adhesive or suitable double-sided adhesive tape should be used between the flange and the mounting surface to prevent water intrusion. 3. The display may be fastened to the sign structure by drilling through the flange and using screws or pop rivets. Use a minimum of four screws or rivets to anchor the sign in place. The back of the Price Watcher display may be attached to internal framework or supports using drill screws through the back of the Price Watcher cabinet. One square inch in each corner of the Price Watcher cabinet is clear on the inside to prevent drill screws from penetrating components (see Figure 1 on page 4). WARNING! Do not pre-drill holes in the back of the cabinet without removing the digits. 4. Preparation of the existing sign structure must be done in a way that will provide protection from water on the interior cabinetry. The face of the Price Watcher display(s) must not be blocked by polycarbonate or other material that would inhibit airflow through the vents or around the LEDs (see diagram at bottom of page). 5. Refer to the electrical requirements (page 7) for proper connection and grounding information. An electrical disconnect provided by the installer is required for the Price Watcher. 6. Repair and seal any unused openings in the existing sign structure. Openings greater than ½" in diameter require a metal patch secured by screws or rivets and caulked with non-hardening caulk. Smaller openings may be sealed with non-hardening caulk. !! !! DO NOT BLOCK FRONT VENTILATION SLOT DO NOT BLOCK FRONT VENTILATION SLOT 6 | Need help? It is important to connect the data cables first, then apply or cycle power. 2. The signs will address in the order that the signs are daisy-chained together. If there is a second face, then sign 2.1 will show the same price as 1.1. Sign 2.2 will show the same price as 1.2. 3. To see how the signs are addressed, enter test mode using the remote control and look at the Address Test (test 13). See Using the Price Watcher Remote section, page 9. Routing Data Cables Each cabinet ships with a data cable out the back. 1. Daisy-chain the signs together on face 1 starting at the primary cabinet. 2. Keep data cables a minimum of 3" away from AC wires. Do not route data cables in conduit with AC wires. 3. There is only one primary cabinet per structure (it’s the cabinet with the antenna connection). If there is a second face, then connect sign 1 on face 2 to the primary sign. 4. Daisy-chain the signs in face 2 so they mirror face 1. NOTE: Signs in face 2 must mirror face 1 so that face 2 will show correct prices. This includes proper grounding and bonding of the sign. Grounding Proper grounding protects equipment from electrical disturbances such as lightning. Install an 8' long copper-clad ground rod for each sign structure. • Do not depend on steel sign poles for grounding. Steel poles may corrode over time and will not provide a good earth ground. Copper-clad ground rods resist corrosion and retain their grounding properties. • Install the ground rod so its entire length is in contact with the soil. • Make an electrical connection from the ground rod to the electrical service ground wire. Be sure to protect the wire and its connection points from corrosion. For example, route exposed wire inside conduit. 8 | Need help? To connect power: 1. Each Price Watcher cabinet comes with a set of AC power wires sticking out the back of the cabinet. Use wire nuts to connect the electrical service wires to the wires on the sign. 2. Connect line to the black wire, neutral to the white wire, and ground to the green wire. 3. A knockout is also provided on the left and right sides of the cabinet. Follow these steps to route the power wires out the side of the cabinet: a. Remove the metal inside the knockout. b. Remove the bushing from the hole in the back of the cabinet. c. Install the bushing in the knockout hole. d. Route the power wires through the hole in the side. e. A plastic cap is included in the sign’s accessory kit. Use it to plug the hole in the back of the cabinet. Connecting power in wet locations: 1. Protect the power wiring from water if the sign is being installed in a structure that is not watertight. 2. When retrofitting a sign in an existing sign structure, the structure may no longer be watertight. In that case, route the power wires in conduit to protect those wires and ensure a safe installation. 3. The diameter of the hole in the back of the sign is suitable for ¾" conduit. Remove the plastic bushing from the hole, then install conduit and route the power wires. 4. The knockouts on the sides of the cabinet are also suitable for ¾" conduit. The conduit may be attached on the sides to route the power wires from the side of the cabinet. When attaching conduit on the side, be sure to use the plastic plug in the accessory kit to plug the hole in the back. 630012 Manual, March 2016 Rev 7 | v020216 Need help? If prices will not be set automatically through the POS, set the system to manual control (default). Follow these steps to configure the POS controller: 1. Verify power is applied to all price sign cabinets. Apply power to the POS controller. The controller will go through a boot-sequence and Watchfire’s POS application will automatically launch on startup. 2. Once the Home screen appears, use the stylus to click the Settings button in the upper-right corner of the screen. 3. Select Setup under the Advanced tab. 4. Once in setup, change the parameters to match your installation requirements. • POS System – Select the brand of POS system you’re connecting to or select Manual Mode if you’re going to update the price signs manually. • Signs Per Face – Select the number of price signs that are on one face of the price sign structure outside the store. • # of Faces – Select the number of faces that are on the structure outside the store; either 1 or 2. • Password Protection – Turn password protection on if you want to prevent unauthorized persons from changing settings on the POS controller. 5. Press the Back button and then click the Pole Management button on the Advanced page. Make sure all price signs have power before this step. Point-of-Sale (POS) User Guide • Press the Search button so the interface can locate all price signs. Sign poles (pylons) that are discovered will show up in the list. If you anticipated more sign poles to show up, verify all signs have power; wait a few minutes; and then press the Search button again. • Once signs are found, press the Save button at the bottom of the page. You then have the option of Identifying signs and renaming them. For example, let's say you want to assign a name for all pylons or canopy signs at one location. Highlight Pole 1 and click Identify. The sign will flash an alternating pattern of 999 - 921. Go outside and locate the sign flashing 999 -921. Let's say the signs flashing are on the south side of a canopy. Rename Pole 1 as "Canopy South". Repeat this process for all sign poles listed, giving them names that make sense geographically. Click Save once finished. 630012 Manual, March 2016 Rev 7 | v020216 Need help? Contact support at watchfiresigns.com/kb or 1-866-637-2645 | 25 Price Watcher Troubleshooting & Maintenance General Troubleshooting If your Price Watcher sign is not functioning properly, it may be due to several reasons: lack of power, an automatic shutdown triggered by LED diagnostics, an over-temperature condition, or a part in need of replacement. Ordering a replacement part should only be done after tests are performed to determine the cause of the malfunction. Power Test: One quick way to test whether power is getting to the sign is to turn the sign’s power off and then turn power back on. • If you cycle power to the sign and the decimal point briefly turns on, each digit turns all on, then the sign goes blank, you can be certain that power is getting to your sign. • If the decimal point does not turn on, then power may not be getting to the sign. This may be the result of a malfunctioning power supply, controller digit, or power cable. Contact the local sign dealer to troubleshoot this type of malfunction. If the Power Test shows that power is getting to your sign, an automatic LED diagnostic shutdown or over-temperature condition may be the source of the malfunction. • To determine which one, use your Price Watcher remote or point-of-sale controller to go into test mode and look at the All On test (For remote, see Test 1 in the Test Mode section, pg. 11 or for POS go to Settings > Advanced > Test on the POS controller). This test will continuously flash all digits on for one second and off for one second. • Look to see if any digit has LEDs out. This will indicate which digit is causing the failure. • If a single or multiple digits are not displaying anything, then the malfunction is probably caused by a bad data or power cable. If there are no LEDs out, then an over-temperature error may be blanking the sign. Test to see if that is the case. • Use your Price Watcher remote to go into Test Mode and scroll to the over-temperature setting (Test 10). For POS, contact Watchfire Technical Support for assistance in setting the over-temperature threshold above 65°C. • Set the over-temperature threshold to its highest setting. Exit Test Mode. If the price comes on the display, then an over-temperature condition caused the sign to blank automatically. This auto- shutdown is a safety feature of your Price Watcher sign, to protect the electronics within the sign from heat-related damage. In this case, verify that fans inside the cabinet are functioning and then set the over-temperature setting back to the desired threshold. Default setting is 65°C (149°F). Point-of-Sale If Watchfire's POS controller is unable to Search and find all sign poles (pylons) or if communication is spotty, make sure the host radio is connected to the radio RJ-45 port on the POS controller. Make sure the host radio is located in a spot with good line-of-sight to the price signs. Make sure that antennas were installed on the sign face of each primary cabinet (one antenna per pylon). If signs are connected, but prices are not going through, make sure the correct mode is selected on the POS controller. Go to Settings -> Advanced tab -> Setup. If your wanting to set the prices manually, make sure the unit is set to Manual mode, otherwise select the brand of POS system you're connected to. 26 | Need help? Contact support at watchfiresigns.com/kb or 1-866-637-2645 630012 Manual, March 2016 Rev 7 | v020216 LED Diagnostics Automated Diagnostics periodically run on the sign to check for malfunctioning LEDs. If a defined percentage of LEDs in any segment malfunction, then the sign will automatically go blank. This is to prevent the sign from displaying a false price. (For example, if a digit is displaying the number seven, and part of the top segment is bad, the seven might display as the number one.) The default setting for segment failure is 20%. This means that if 20% of the LEDs are bad in any segment, then the sign will go blank. This segment failure percentage is adjustable. Please refer to the remote modes section (see Test Mode, Test 9, pg. 11) or to the LED Threshold Screen for POS (pg. 22) to learn how to adjust the segment failure threshold. Over-temperature Shutdown The Price Watcher sign constantly monitors the internal temperature of the cabinet. If the internal temperature exceeds the over-temperature setting, then the sign will go blank. This is to protect components from overheating. Once the temperature goes back down, the sign will turn back on. The default over-temperature setting is 65°C (149°F). This setting is adjustable. Refer to the remote modes section of this manual or to the Over Temp Threshold section under point-of sale to learn how to adjust the setting. WARNING! Contact Watchfire support before permanently setting the threshold above 65°C. Watchfire reserves the right to void warranty if the over-temperature threshold is set higher than 65°C without express consent.!!
