Re: Tower Review for Sheathing Installation
edm Project # FPS-4507
Dear Mark:
As requested, edm has performed a structural review of an existing tower structure
located at 297 Haydenville Road, Leeds, MA. The review of this structure relates to
the proposed installation of a new sheathing enclosure.
The existing tower is 88 feet tall and 18 feet in diameter. The structure consists of a
two (2) inch diameter by ¼ inch thick wall structural tube legs. There is diagonal
bracing forming a lattice/truss system around the perimeter of the structure. The
foundation consists of eight (8) 24-inch diameter reinforced concrete piers and five
(5) foot square reinforced concrete footings.
It is proposed to provide a wood framed cladding* around the outside of the structure
creating an enclosure that is 88 feet tall and 21+/- feet in diameter. The wood
enclosure shall consist of the following:
Wall framing consisting of 2x4 nominal wood studs installed at 16 inches on
center with a ½ inch wood panel sheathing.
The sidewalls shall be constructed in section with a maximum height of 14
feet and each wall section carrying a floor framing consisting 2x8 nominal
wood joist. In addition, the existing floor framing of the tower structure shall
be reinforced with two (2) steel joists, installed at 90 degrees to the wood
joist, at each floor framing level spanning between the new wood wall
sections. The wall sections shall be strapped together with steel strapping
carrying uplift and lateral loads across the joints for the wall section. This
shall include the floor sections across the adjacent wall sections around the
circumference forming a continuous wall system.
* The wood enclosure, new floor frame at 14 feet levels, and new foundation for the
new enclosure design, and engineering has been prepared by others.
The floor sections are only to facilitate access for maintenance of the proposed
equipment. The proposed equipment is not to be supported in any fashion from the
existing tower structure or the proposed wall sheathing or floor framing.

Tower Review for Sheathing Installation
edm Project # FPS-4507
Page: 2 of 2
The existing tower structure and the proposed wall and floor framing systems have
been analytically evaluated for compliance with structural requirements of the 2015
International Building Code and the 9th Edition of the Massachusetts State Building
Code.
The analytical review was performed based on the following materials:
Structural Steel Tubing – ASTM A500 Grade B.
Miscellaneous Steel Components – ASTM A36.
Wood Framing Elements – Spruce Pine Fir (SPF).
Concrete 28 Design Strength – 3,500 psi.
Reinforcement Steel Design Strength – 60,000 psi.
Based on the frame and enclosure structure as described above, it is the opinion of
edm that the existing tower frame structure is adequate to carry the additional loads
of the framed wall sheathing with out any modifications.
It should be noted that for the purposes of this review, the vertical loads from the new
floor framing were transmitted to the new wall framing system and carried to the new
foundation below. Only lateral loads were transmitted in the existing tower structure.
Should the vertical floor loads be transmitted into the existing tower frame, the tower
frame would require reinforcement.
The existing foundations are adequate to carry the additional loads associated with
the enclosure and floor framing.
Feel free to contact edm with any questions or comments you may have.
Sincerely,
edm
