This package includes: 1. This cover memo, 2. My initial sketch (Hampshire Heights Venting SK1 - options) sent to Carrier for their review and comment. 3. My emailed explanation of the issues (to Carrier), Carriers response, and my text to you when I forwarded Carrier's response. (1 email trail) 4. An SK2 showing the installation method you verbally told the Contractor’s site super was "approved" - based on Carrier's input. If you have any questions, or feel additional information should be included in this package, please let me know. My email to Carrier, and their response are both below. Ron Beliveau is Carrier's manager of commercial sales. Greg Mirando is Carrier's manager of technical services. Though Carrier doesn't specifically state the reasons they consider our original venting arrangement satisfactory, I imagine it has to do with the combination of horizontal and vertical separation. We would be both 8" below and 33" away from the DHW vent. This compares to the separation required from the furnace vent itself, which, with a concentric termination is only a few inches of vertical separation, and with 2-pipe termination is only 12" vertical separation. As I mentioned on the phone to you, we did discuss a 3rd alternate at our Friday meeting. That is to install a stainless steel 45 at the DHW vent termination - extending the DHW termination 4-5" further away from the original furnace OA termination. NHA, and the design team all prefer the stainless 45 to the "water buffalo" PVC. I'll call you to discuss if our original venting arrangement would be satisfactory to you - with or without a stainless 45 on the DHW vent. It is our position that the venting as shown on your diagram as existing will meet Carrier requirements. The alternate location will also meet our requirements. We hope the inspector will use his judgment and accept the installation as is. As piped, we currently have 33" direct-line clearance between the OA intake and DHW flue, and 37" clearance between the OA intake and plumbing vent. Since the Carrier installation manual calls for 3' clearance to both a DHW vent and plumbing vent, the plumbing inspector is not accepting these 1st installation. The plan view, also shows a possible alternate for the OA piping, which would give us the 36" required clearance to the DHW flue, while maintaining 3' clearance to the plumbing vent. Although it gives us greater horizontal clearance, it also MAY be "less safe", since the chimney wall would not help as much to shield the OA intakes from any down-draft of DHW gasses. Please review with the factory engineer, and let us know what clearances Carrier would recommend in this situation.
