ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and
evaluate in terms of other buildings within community)
The house is two stories in height with ridge roof and tall
central chimney. The symmetrical five-bay facade has a central entrance
and two over two sash windows. Other detailing is hidden by the asbestos
covering. Within the side gableis one six over six sash window. A series
of additions extends to the rear of the property on the southern side of
the house.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history
and how the building relates to the development of the community)
In 1835 "the New Haven-Northampton Canal opened to great fanfare. George Bancroft gave the oration and the event heralded a new age for the growing town of Northampton. Now it could be a seaport! However, this dream was short-lived, railroads were coming and the canal went bankrupt in 1847, in what was purportedly the most disasterous failure in Connecticut Valley history. Over the next quarter century the canal was filled in and laid out as State St.
This large house is the only structure along the street that \i&s probably standing while the canal was iH operation. From visual evidence it would appear that the house dates from the late 18th century, but at that time there were no streets between Prospect and King Sts. Deed inform-ation identifies this as the Simeon Edwards homestead as early as 1803 but the house was proaably located on Prospect St., which served as the western bound of the homestead. There is a possibility that the older house was mosred to this site during the 1830's.
In 1838 Davis Eatekins purchased about an acre of land at this site and established his homestead here, maintaining the property until 1856 when Mark Spaulding purchased it. Col. Spaulding, as he was known, lived here until the late 1880's, and was a co-owner of the Round Hill Hotel during the 1870's.
