Date December 05, 2016
To Carolyn Misch, City of Northampton Office of Planning & Sustainability
From Naomi Cottrell, Principal Michelle Crowley Landscape Architecture
Regarding: Construction Project- Tree Removal and
Northampton Zoning Ordinance 350-12.3 Significant Trees
Dear Ms Carolyn Misch:
Thank you for the opportunity to submit this memo, the site survey, and proposed planting plan describing
the tree removals and replacements for the project at 155 Pleasant Street. We have reviewed Zoning
Ordinance 350-12.3 Significant Trees and offer the following proposal:
Tree Removals:
As the result of construction activities including utility and re-grading efforts, it is necessary for us to
remove the following (4) four trees. The DBH of these trees are provided by Holmberg and Howe
Associates on the site survey dated January 26, 2016:
• (2) 24” DBH Honeylocust
• (1) 20” DBH Honeylocust
• (1) 6” DBH Maple (not considered a significant tree because of size)
Per the Zoning Ordinance, we understand that the significant trees, over 20” DBH, require a replacement.
Our removals include (3) three significant trees, totaling 68” DBH.
Replacement Canopy Trees:
Our Proposed Planting Plan- Revised dated December 2, 2016 illustrates a total replacement of 34”
caliper of canopy trees including:
• (3) 5” caliper Honeylocust
• (1) 2” caliper Honeylocust
• (2) 5” caliper Sugar Maple
• (1) 5” caliper Pin Oak
• (1) 2” caliper Pin Oak
Additional Proposed Trees:
Our Proposed Planting Plan- Revised dated December 2, 2016 illustrates an additional (31) mid-sized,
understory trees that we are not including in our replacement calculations:
• (22) 10-12’ht Gray Birch
• (4) 10-12’ht Amelanchier
• (3) 10-12’ht Redbud
• (2) 10-12’ht Kousa Dogwood
Please do not hesitate to contact me for additional information.
