SECTION 1 – BUILDING DESCRIPTION
1.1 BUILDING DESCRIPTION:
a. General:
· Description of building: single story office building used for radio
studios.
b. Building Use Group
· Use Group B (Business)
d. Area of the Building: About 3,800 SF
e. Construction of Building: Masonry
f. Hazardous Material Storage: None
g. High Piled Storage: None
h. Site Access
· Fire Department apparatus may access the site from Hampton
Street
1.2 APPLICABLE LAWS, REGULATIONS & STANDARDS
a. 780 CMR – Massachusetts Amendments to the International Building
Code 2009
· Chapter 9 “Fire Protection and Life Safety Systems”
b. 527 CMR 24.00 – Board of Fire Prevention Regulations
c. NFPA Standards
· NFPA 72 - National Fire Alarm Code (2010)
· NFPA 70 – National Electrical Code with MA Amendments (2011)
1.3 DESIGN RESPONSIBILITIES
a. Engineer of Record
· Design – Build, the installing fire alarm contractor completely
designs and specifies the fire alarm system. The installing
contractor installs the system and certifies the system installation
for code compliance at completion.
1.4 FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM
a. Fire Alarm System
· The building will be protected by a supervised fire detection and
alarm system in accordance with NFPA 72. Pull stations are
located at each exit, a smoke will be provided over the fire panel
and spaced throughout the office and a heat detector will be placed
in the kitchen. ADA horn and strobes will be installed for patron
and employee notification and evacuation. The fire panel will
incorporate a digital dialer for automatic Northampton Fire
Department notification.
b. Method of Future Testing
· Maintenance, inspection, and testing shall be provided as per
NFPA 72. Proper testing and maintenance of the systems is the
responsibility of the owner.
SECTION 2 – SEQUENCE OF OPERATION
2.1 FIRE ALARM SYSTEM
a. Upon manual activation of a pull station or automatic operation of a
smoke or heat detector, the following intended functions will be
performed. The sequence intended to initiate total building evacuation
and notify the Northampton Fire Department of an emergency condition.
a. Indicate alarm condition on the fire alarm panel located in the main
entrance. Additionally a red beacon will flash above the entrance.
· Initiate building evacuation via fire alarm system notification
appliances.
· Transmit alarm signal via digital dialer to USA Central.
b. Upon activation of a duct smoke detector the following intended
functions will be performed. The sequence intended to initiate total
building evacuation and notify the Northampton Fire Department of an
emergency condition.
a. Indicate alarm condition on the fire alarm panel located in the main
entrance. Additionally a red beacon will flash above the entrance
· Initiate building evacuation via fire alarm system notification
appliances.
· Shut down the air handler unit which activated the duct smoke
detector.
· Transmit alarm signal via digital dialer to USA Central.
SECTION 3 TESTING CRITERIA
3.1 TESTING CRITERIA
a. The installing contractor shall develop and administer the testing
schedule and will coordinate notification of appropriate parties.
b. System will undergo a functional pre-acceptance fire alarm test which
will be conducted by the installing contractor. Documentation of the
testing results will be copied to the Code Official.
c. Upon successful completion of the fire alarm pre-acceptance testing,
the tests will be repeated at the discretion of the Code Official during a
scheduled final acceptance test to be witnessed by the Code Official.
3.2 APPROVAL REQUIREMENTS
a. The following documentation shall be submitted to the Code Official
along with a request to schedule a final fire alarm acceptance test.
· Cebula Electronics Corp. dba Fire Detection Systems certification
of project completion in accordance with 780 CMR with
attached pre-acceptance test reports.
b. Final Acceptance Test Documentation
· Confirmation of the final acceptance test date shall be
coordinated by the Code Official and installing professional
verbally or in writing at the discretion of the Code Official.
· Should all systems satisfy operational code compliance
requirements to the satisfaction of the Code Official at the time
of the final acceptance tests, the Code Official shall indicate
approval of the installation in writing.
· Should any system or portion of a system fail to satisfy code
compliance requirements to the satisfaction of the Code Official
at the time of the final acceptance test, at the discretion of the
Code Official, the deficiency shall be corrected and retested
during the test or the testing shall be rescheduled and repeated
to the extent deemed necessary by the Code Official. An order
to reschedule the testing shall be made in writing by the Code
Official. The order shall indicate the code deficiencies that must
be corrected.
