Assignment On May 22, 2015, David Paine of Plan it Green Landscape Architecture contacted me to assist with the tree protection at the Columns at Rockwell Place – 30 Village Hill Road in Northampton, Massachusetts. The proposed construction project could interact with the existing trees on the site. Trees are a tangible and valuable part of the Columns at Rockwell Place project. Their protection and care is an important objective of the owner. Accordingly, I was contracted to prepare this report of tree protection for trees which may be impinged upon by the construction. This report is also concerned about trees outside the construction areas that could be adversely affected from activities directly related to the construction project. A main objective of the project is to install a parking area east of Building #17. The map on the next page shows the trees within the survey limit of the construction project. Included in this report will be recommendations of tree protection that will be administered prior to the start of construction. There may also be recommendations of tree care to be enacted prior to the construction. If recommendations of this type are suggested they will be to improve the conditions of the tree or trees in anticipation of unpreventable damage. These recommendations may include removing or transplanting trees that cannot be safely protected. Treatments such as pruning, air spade investigation, root pruning, fertilization or mulching are examples of such recommendations. Observations - Site visits on June, 2, 2015 and July 21, 2015 I inspected every tree and performed a tree health and risk assessment of each tree. The trees were located on an aerial photograph and on the Site Plan Layout1 drawing. These will serve as tree location maps for this report. Analysis Prior to the preparation of this report I inventoried the trees that will be impacted by the construction project. I located them on current aerial photographs and drawings and assessed their current condition. One tree is dead and others have some deadwood in their canopies. The proposed Columns at Rockwell Place project is going to interact with a minimum of twelve trees. These trees are listed in the table below. Some trees are in the footprint of the construction project and cannot be preserved. Others may be affected because of root damage and grade changes. The table below recommends the trees to be removed prior to the project and the trees that can be preserved. This table may change as the project progresses. Table 1– Tree Recommendations Number of Trees to Be Removed Prior to the Project 1 Number of Trees to Be Transplanted Prior to the Project 6 Number of Trees to Be Protected During the Project 5 The Columns at Rockwell Place – Tree Protection 8 30 Village Hill Road, Northampton, MA Arbor and Horticulture AdvisorArbor and Horticulture AdvisorArbor and Horticulture AdvisorArbor and Horticulture Advisor 7/23/2015 McCarthy, Charles W. - Consulting Arborist ISA Certified Arborist - ASCA Member Six trees have to be transplanted prior to the start of the project. One tree should be taken down prior to the start of the project. The remaining five trees can be protected during the project. In order to preserve the remaining five trees measures of tree protection will have to be administered. The tables later in the report have recommendations concerning individual trees in each section. These recommendations could change if the proposed project is changed. In the report the tree protective zone (TPZ) is the area that cannot be entered during the project. This will insure that the roots, branches, trunk or stems are not damaged during construction. The tree protective zone for the purpose of this project will be at a minimum the area to the edge of the dripline of the tree. This area will at a minimum serve as the protective root zone (PRZ) and the critical root zone (CRZ). Although larger areas are more desirable they cannot be achieved because of lack of space. A fence will be installed to define the TPZ for each protected tree prior to the start of construction. The main objective of the report is tree protection. All trees whose optimal tree protective zone (TPZ) is within fifty feet of the limit of work (including lay down areas) were inventoried. The tree protective zone in this project extends to the edge of the dripline. A protective fence will be installed to define this area. No one should enter this area during the construction project. If this is adhered to the trees will not be impacted by the project. Protective Root Zone – Trees involved within the construction area should have a tree protection zone (TPZ) which extends at a minimum to the dripline of the tree when possible. This area will remain free from construction. Fencing will be installed prior to construction to identify the protective zone. If the construction must enter the protective zone the consulting arborist must be notified and present to determine tree health or safety risks. Remedial actions may be recommended such as root pruning, pruning or tree removal. b. Excavation and Backfilling – Open trenching close to the base of the trunk within the protective zone is not acceptable. Exposed roots should be properly root pruned under the supervision of the consulting arborist. These roots should be kept moist while exposed. Covering with burlap to help shade them is acceptable. Backfilling trenches in the root zone areas should be done with a quality of top soil that is representative of the original soil removed. d. Excavation Material Storage – No fill from the excavations will be stored under any trees within the protective zones. No fill will be stored under the canopies of trees inside the immediate construction areas or outside of the immediate construction areas. If this is unavoidable the consulting arborist must be notified to determine the tree health risks. e. Soil Compaction – No equipment will be allowed inside the protective zone. No storage of building materials will be allowed under inside the protective zone. If this is unavoidable the consulting arborist must be notified to determine the tree health risks. Conclusion All the trees that will be impacted by the Columns at Rockwell construction project were inventoried prior to the start of construction. Several genera of woody plants were identified. All of the trees are identified on the tree inventory aerial maps and drawings. These maps and drawings will be made available to the contractors. The following tables below list the trees that will be protected during the project. Recommendations prior to the construction and during the construction project can be found in the tables. Protecting trees can be easy. Staying out of the protective root zone insures the protection of the trees. It should be easy to protect the trees if the guidelines in this report are followed. To summarize – 1. One dead tree will be removed prior to the start of the construction project. This Tree is identified in the report on aerial maps and construction drawings. The consulting arborist will be available to identify (flag) the tree to avoid any mistakes. 2. Six trees will be transplanted prior to the start of the construction project. These trees are identified in the report on aerial maps and construction drawings. The consulting arborist will be available to identify (flag) the trees to avoid any mistakes. 3. Five trees will be protected in the construction area. All the protected trees will have fencing to their protective root zone (TPZ). These trees are identified in the report on aerial maps and construction drawings. Specific measures of tree protection are outlined in the report on page #9. Adherence to theses guidelines is essential to the health of the trees. The consulting arborist will be available to identify the trees to avoid any mistakes. The Columns at Rockwell Place project is going to interact with many trees on the property. Some trees will have to be removed to accommodate the project. Many trees can survive the construction project if serious efforts are made to protect them. This report attempts to address every tree individually that is involved with the construction project. Additions and exceptions will certainly have to be made as the project evolves. The report should be used as a guide to the contractors to emphasize that the trees are important to the Columns at Rockwell Place owners. Hopefully it will assist the owners and its’ contractors to work as a team to protect the oldest living organisms on property – the trees.
