Opal renovations on two
Round Hill Road buildings in

get underway in May

NORTHAMPTON — The city’s building inspector said a $10 million project that will transform several
buildings on the former Clarke School for the Deaf campus on Round Hill Road is on track to start
soon.
“I absolutely believe construction will start in May,” said Northampton Building Commissioner Louis
Hasbrouck. “The project is going forward.”
Michael Siddall, a Springfield lawyer representing Opal Real Estate Group, which is developing the
project known as Historic Round Hill Summit, confirmed that work on two buildings will soon gear up.
Beyond that he declined comment Thursday morning until he confers with his client, Peter Picknelly of
Opal.
Demetrios N. Panteleakis, former spokesman for the project, is no longer involved, according to
Siddall.
Meanwhile, Hasbrouck said the interior of two buildings, Hubbard and Rogers halls on the east side of
Round Hill Road, have been gutted, and he expects the renovations to begin in May.
The Opal Real Estate Group of Springfield bought a portion of Clarke’s 11.8acre campus two years
ago, with controversial plans to build luxury homes and a mix of office and medical space in several
buildings formerly used by Clarke School.
Hasbrouck said Opal has lined up two contractors and two architects for the Hubbard and Rogers
renovations. He expects work on Hubbard to get started first.
“The reason they’re talking about two contractors and two architects is because they want to get it
moving,” Hasbrouck added.
Hasbrouck said he plans a meeting next week with Opal and the contractors to walk the property and
discuss the next steps in terms of how the project will proceed.
