Vreeland Design Associates Re: Michael Jones 966 Ryan Rd, Florence, MA: Structural assessment of existing house roof to support proposed solar array. I have investigated the existing roof framing of the house for the proposed PV solar panel installation. The modular built 25'x 40', 1-story ranch style house was constructed in 1968. The rafters are 2x6, appear to be Douglas-fir with a found grade stamp of 1500 psi for bending which corresponds to select structural. The rafters are installed 16" on-center, spanning 12' with a 4/12 roof pitch. The rafters are inline and notched 1" into 2x4 select structural ceiling joists. It appears that the rafters are nailed down through the top of the rafters into the 2x4's. 1 x4 diagonal tension braces are attached to the side of the 2x6 rafters approximately 30"from the ridge and angle down and secured to the side of the 2x4 ceiling joists approximately at mid-span. At the ridge the rafters are secured with metal nail plates. The roofing is new standing seam metal. 16 PV solar panels are to be installed on the south facing house roof. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed solar arrays. Based on my calculations and on the specified PV solar panel unit weight of 42± lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter, the existing roof framing of the house and addition are adequate to support the proposed PV solar arrays and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code.
