Vreeland Design Associates Re: Zach Swan, 508 Sylvester Rd, Florence, MA: Structural assessment of existing 36'x 70' barn roof to support proposed solar array. On 4/25/18, I conduct a site visit and investigated the existing roof framing of the 36'x 70', 2- story gambrel barn built around 1948. The rafters are 13/4"x 53/4" installed at 24" on-center, spanning 12' on the upper slope and spanning 6' on the lower steep slope. The slope of the upper roof is 8/12. The intersection of the upper and lower rafters are reinforced with a 2x6 bolted to the upper 2x6 approximately 5' horizontally from the intersection and bolted to the lower rafter approximately 3' horizontally from the intersection. The roofing is new corrugated metal panels screwed down to 1 x4 horizontal strapping installed 16"on-center and screwed through the existing asphalt shingles and roof boards into the rafters with 2—3" HeadLok structural screws. 40 PV solar panels are to be installed on the east facing upper rpof using CorruSlide mounting brackets screwed to the metal roofing. Snow guards are to be installed along the base of the first 5 panels starting at the north end of the array. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed array. Based on my calculations and a PV solar panel unit weight of 41f lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 3' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter, the existing roof framing is adequate to support the proposed PV solar array and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code.
