Mike Rose P.E. Rose Engineering Re: Joe Ryan (Ryan Imported Car Repair), 2 Brewster Ct, Northampton, MA: Structural Assessment of Existing Garage Structure Roof to Support Proposed Solar Array. On 8/29/2018 I conducted a site visit and investigated the existing garage roof for the proposed PV solar panel installation. The commercial garage structure has 2 stories and a large accessible attic space. The roof framing consists of 2x6 top chord Double Howe design roof trusses with piggy-back trusses installed on top. The trusses are installed at 24"on-center and span 47' with a 9/12 roof pitch. The roofing is asphalt shingles. 40 PV solar panels are to be installed on the south-facing roof. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed solar array. Based on a PV solar panel unit weight of41f lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one roof truss, the roof framing is adequate to support the proposed PV solar array and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code.
