assessment of existing house roofs to support proposed solar arrays.
I have investigated the existing roof framing in the areas of the proposed PV solar panel
installations. The 28'x 37',2-story house with 28'x 14',2-story ell off the back, south side was
constructed in 1900. 12 PV solar panels are to be installed on the south facing main house roof and
10 solar panels will be installed on the west facing roof of the ell. The house and ell rafters are full
dimension 2x6 installed at 24"on-center, spanning 13'-8" with a 9/12 pitch. What appears to be
2x8 atticjoists are attached to the sides of the 2x4 wall studs, approximately 10"down from the
top of the wall,at 16"on-center. The rafters are supported and attached to the top of a double 2x4
wall top plate. The Floor system prevents the roof from spreading. The valley rafters at the
intersection of the house and ell are 3"x 10". The roofing is composite asphalt shingles.
The existing full length 2x6 rafters on the south side of the house and west side of the ell that
support the solar panels have too long of a span and need to be reinforced by installing a 2x4
kneewall located 2'-6" in from the exterior wall to reduce the span of the rafters. The vertical 2x4
can be attached to the sides of the rafter with 3—3"TimberLok or equivalent structural screws and
toe screwed to a 2x4 plate that has been attached to the top of the attic joists. The rafters that have
an 11'-6"or less horizontal span attached to the valley rafters and support the solar panels do not
need additional support.
1 have reviewed the mounting details for the PV solar arrays. Based on my calculations and a PV
solar panel unit weight of 42t lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of
4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter, the reinforced rafters as outlined
above are adequate to support the proposed PV solar arrays and the snow and wind load
requirements of the current MA State Building Code.
