Vreeland Design Associates Re: Oliver Hatch, 12 Cloverdale St, Florence, MA: Structural assessment of new second floor house addition roof and existing garage roof to support proposed solar arrays. 1 have reviewed the plans for the new second floor addition on the house and investigated the roof framing of the addition and detached garage for the proposed PV solar panel installations.The original 24'x 30' cape style house was constructed in 1945.The roof of the new second floor addition on the house is framed with a 2— 12" LVL ridge beam running the 30' length of the house posted in the middle with the post continuing down to a new footing in the basement.The rafters are 2x 10 installed 16"on-center, spanning 1 P-6"with 9/12 pitch on the main roof and a 5/12 pitch on a 12' wide shed dormer. The 15'x 26', 1-story garage is framed with full dimension 2x6 rafters, installed 24"on-center, spanning T-2". The ceiling prevents the roof from spreading. 12 PV solar panels are to be installed on the new west facing house roof, 6 panels on the main roof and 6 panels on the shed dormer,and 10 solar panels on the south facing roof of the garage. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed array. Based on my calculations and a PV panel unit weight of 46t lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter, the house and garage roof framing is adequate to support the proposed PV solar arrays and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code.
