The main part ofthe house is 22'x45' and has 2-stories with an attic.The roof framing consists of rafters that are full dimension 2x5.25, installed at 17.5"on-center. The rafters span 11', with a roofpitch of 7/12. The ceiling assembly prevents the roof from spreading. 8 solar panels are to be installed on the south-east roofofthe main house. The roofing is asphalt shingles. The detached garage is approximately 22'x22'. The roof framing consists of rafters that are full dimension 2x4, installed at 24"on-center. The rafters span 10'8", with a roof pitch of 7/12. Rafter ties are attached to the bottom ofthe rafters which prevent the roof from spreading. 12 solar panels are to be installed on the south-east roof of the detached garage. The roofing is asphalt shingles. The existing 2x4 rafters, on the garage roof, have too long ofa span to meet the current building code requirements. The south-east facing rafters that are to support the solar panels need to be reinforced by sistering 10' long 2x6s to the face of each. Attach the 10' long 2x6s to the existing rafters so that the 2x6s are centered along the span ofthe existing rafters. Secure the 2x6s to the existing rafters using (2) Tlmbe[LOK,or equivalent structural screw, spaced at 12"O.C. for the length ofthe 2x6s. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed array. Based on a PV solar panel unit weight of 40t lbs,with the attachment points ofthe array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter,the roof framing,as outlined above, is adequate to support the proposed PV solar array and the snow and wind load requirements ofthe current MA State Building Code.
