Roofto Support Proposed Solar Array.
I have reviewed the roof framing details on the house roof for the proposed PV solar panel
installation. The main part ofthe house is 32'x30' and has 2-stories with attic storage. The roof
framing consists of rafters that are full dimension 2x5, installed at varying spacing, between 20"-
24"on-center.The rafters span 14'-6", with a roof pitch of 8/12. The attic floor is constructed
from full dimension 2x4 joists that are installed at 16"on-center and run perpendicular to the
rafters. The floor system is attached to the exterior walls which prevents the roof from spreading.
27 solar panels are to be installed on the south roof of the main house. The roofing is asphalt
shingles.
The existing 2x5 rafters, on the main house roof, have too long of a span to meet the current
building code requirements. The south facing rafters that are to support the solar panels need to
be reinforced by sistering 12' long 2x8s to the face of each. Attach the 12' long 2x8s to the
existing rafters so that the 2x8s are centered along the span ofthe existing rafters. Secure the
2x8s to the existing rafters using 2 TimberLOK,or equivalent structural screw, spaced at 12"
O.C. for the length ofthe 2x8s.
1 have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed array. Based on a PV solar panel unit
weight of40f lbs, with the attachment points ofthe array placed at a maximum of 4' on center
and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter,the roof framing, as outlined above, is
adequate to support the proposed PV solar array and the snow and wind load requirements ofthe
current MA State Building Code.
