MEDICATION CLINIC SERVICES
Clients are seen by a psychiatrist in 30 minute appointments . The
M. D. assesses the client ' s mental status and, in most cases , writes
a prescription for medication. The client is given a return
appointment , generally one to three months later.
There are two part-time psychiatrists . Their combined hours of
medication clinic work totals 35 hours. Of these hours , about 25
to 27 are used to see clients . The remaining time is
administrative .
One psychiatrist sees patients on Monday and Friday from 9 a. m. to
12 noon. The other psychiatrist is here Tuesday and Wednesday
evening and all day Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Consequently ,
the only overlap is Friday morning .
In addition, one full-time R.N. is employed in the med clinic and
we are in the process of hiring a half-time R.N . The nurses sit in
on the patient interviews with the psychiatrists and spend a great
deal of time on the phone responding to inquiries about specific
clients . They do not see clients on a one-to-one basis separate
from the psychiatrists.
The population that we serve probably differs greatly from that
served by "regular" medical offices -- if we are to be considered
medical offices . By reason of their mental illness and the poverty
they experience , the great majority of our clients do not have
cars . They largely rely on buses or foot for transportation. Many
of our clients receive Social Security and cannot and do not
support vehicles with that income . The 131 King Street site is on
bus lines and is only . 3 miles from the center of downtown
Northampton. Therefore , I do not believe that the Med Clinic would
generate a significant amount of vehicle traffic .
