Vreeland Design Associates Re: Martin Ringey, 381 N. Farms Rd, Florence, MA: Structural assessment of existing barn/house roof to support proposed solar array. On 8/4/17, I conduct a site visit and investigated the existing roof framing of the 36'x 60', 2-story gambrel barn built around 1920. Half the length of the barn, the eastern section, has been renovated into a 2-story home. The rafters are full dimension 2x6 installed at 24" on-center, spanning 14' on the upper slope and spanning 4' on the lower steep slope. The intersection of the upper and lower rafters are supported by 8x8 purlin beams, located 14'-6" above the 2"d floor, spanning 15' and supported on angled 8x8 posts. The lower steep sloped 2x6 rafters appear to provide some support of the purlin beams to the top of the rd floor exterior wall. The upper rafters over the section that is has been renovated into the home has been reinforced with scissored 2x6's with the upper ends of the 2x6s attached to the mid-point of the rafters and the lower ends attached to the opposite purlin beam. Where the scissored 2x6s cross, blocking has been installed and the intersection nailed together. These crossed 2x6s reinforce the long span of the upper rafters. 32 PV solar panels are to be installed along the 61' length of the upper roof. The roofing is screwed down metal panels. The south upper rafters over the western half of the barn that has not be renovated need to be reinforced to limit the deflection of the existing rafters and support the proposed solar panels. Install 12' long 2x6s, centered on the length of the existing rafters, and attach with 2 —21/2" TimberLok screws at 16" on-center or nail with 2— 10d nails at 12"on-center. I have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed array. Based on my calculations and a PV solar panel unit weight of 40± lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter, the reinforced roof framing as detailed above and the existing roof framing over the home section are adequate to support the proposed PV solar array and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code.
