Vreeland Design Associates Re: Ward Solar Project, 368 Burts Pit Rd, Florence, MA: Structural assessment of existing house roofs to support proposed solar arrays. I have investigated the details of the existing roof framing in the areas of the proposed PV solar panel installations. The original 2-story house was constructed in 1900. 6 PV solar panels are to be installed on a south facing shed dormer roof constructed in the 1980's and 9 panels installed on an east facing roof. The south facing shed dormer rafters are 2x8 installed at 24'°on-center,spanning 8'-0"with a 4.5/12 roof slope. 2x6 ceiling joists are attached to the bottom of the dormer rafters and the 2x8 north rafters and prevent the roof from spreading. The east facing roof rafters are full dimension 2x4 installed 24"on-center, spanning 6'-0". The rafters are supported on a 2x4 balloon framed wall with the top of the wall approximately 2' above the attic floor. The attic floor joists are full dimension 2x6,installed at 16"on-center and secured to the side of the wall studs preventing the roof from spreading. The roofing is asphalt shingles. 1 have reviewed the mounting details for the proposed arrays. Based on my calculations and a PV solar panel emit weight of 40± lbs, with the attachment points of the array placed at a maximum of 4' on center and staggered to minimize the load to any one rafter, the existing roof framing for both the shed dormer and east facing roof are adequate to support the proposed PV array and the snow and wind load requirements of the current MA State Building Code..
