5.4.3 Access to Equipment on Roofs;
a. Gas utilization equipment located on roofs or other elevated
locations shall be accessible.
b. Buildings of more than 15 feet in height shall have an inside
means of access to the roof.
c. The inside means of access shall be a permanent, or fold-away,
inside stairway or ladder, terminating in an enclosure,scuttle or
trap door. Such scuttles or trap doors shall be at least 24 inches
by 24 inches in size,shall open easily and safely under all condi-
tions, especially snow, and shall be constructed so as to permit
access from the roof side unless deliberately locked on the inside.
At least 6 feet of clearance shall be available between the
access opening and the edge of the roof or similar hazard, or
rigidly fixed rails or guards at least 42 inches in height shall be
provided on the exposed side; parapets or other building struc-
ture at least 42 inches in height may be utilized in lieu of guards
or rails.
d. Proper permanent lighting shall be provided at the roof
access. The switch for such lighting shall be located inside the
building near the access means leading to the roof.
5.4.4 Additional Provisions: Also see 5.1.22, 5.2.1 and 7.14.3.
5.5 Equipment Connections to Building Piping.
5.5.1 Connecting Gas Equipment: Gas utilization equipment shall
be connected to the building piping in compliance with 5.5.4 by one of
the following:
a. Rigid metallic pipe and fittings.
b. Semirigid metallic tubing and metallic fittings. Aluminum
alloy tubing shall not be used in exterior locations.
c. Listed gas appliance connectors used in accordance with the
terms of their listing that are completely in the same room as the
equipment.
d. Listed gas hose connectors in accordance with 5.5.2.
e. Gas-fired commercial cooking equipment listed for use with
casters or otherwise subject to movement for cleaning,and other
large and heavy gas utilization equipment that may be moved,
shall be connected by a listed appliance connector complying
with the Standard for Connectors for Movable Gas Appliances,
ANSI Z21.69.
